Why? Because you're not monitoring it. You built the site, it went live, and now you're focused on leads and calls. Speed monitoring feels like a backend task. It's not. How Speed Regresses Without Changes
You didn't update your site. Your hosting is the same. But these things did change.
Image bloat. You added three new before-and-after photos to your roof repair gallery. They're beautiful. They're also 4 MB each when they could be 400 KB. The page now loads 2 seconds slower on 4G mobile.

None of these are catastrophic alone. Together, they're a 0.5-second regression. And you're losing conversions every single day.
How to Catch It: Three Monitoring Layers
You need three data points. Not all three need to be expensive.
Layer 1: Automated Weekly Reports Use Google PageSpeed Insights API (free) or Lighthouse CI to scan your site every Sunday. Set thresholds. If mobile Core Web Vitals drop below your baseline, you get an email. You don't need to check it yourself. Just set it and alert when things break.
Tools: Google PageSpeed Insights (free), WebPageTest (free tier available), or Databox (free dashboard integration).
Layer 2: Real User Monitoring PageSpeed is a lab test. Real users on real phones in real conditions matter more. Use a tool that tracks actual visitor load times. Google Analytics 4 includes Web Vitals now (free). Birdeye users get speed data. You're looking for: LCP (largest contentful paint), FID (first input delay), CLS (cumulative layout shift). These three predict conversions better than a lab speed score.

Allocate a speed budget like you allocate a content budget.

- Service pages: max 2.0 seconds LCP on 4G mobile.

When a new feature or image pushes you over, you cut something else. Delete an old testimonial. Compress the new image. Remove an unused tracking pixel.
