How to Set Up Google Business Profile the Right Way (2026 Walkthrough)
A clean GBP setup takes 90 minutes if you do it right the first time. Here's the walkthrough with every field that matters.
By Bo Smith
Most GBP setups are 60% done. Hours filled in, primary category picked, a few photos uploaded, and that''s it. The other 40% is what separates listings that rank from listings that don''t.
Here''s the 90-minute setup we use.
1. Claim and verify (5 minutes)
Search your business on Google Maps. If a listing exists, claim it. If not, create one. Verify by phone, postcard, or video depending on what Google offers.
2. NAP and address (10 minutes)
- Legal business name, no keyword stuffing.
- Address: exact match to what''s on your website footer and your top citations.
- Service area: list every city or neighborhood you serve. Don''t just put the city you''re in.
- Phone: a real local number, not a tracking number.
3. Categories (10 minutes)
- Primary category: the one your customers actually search for. ''Roofing contractor'' beats ''general contractor'' for a roofer.
- Secondary categories: 2-4 more. Don''t add categories you don''t actually serve.
4. Hours (5 minutes)
- Regular hours.
- Special hours for holidays.
- 24/7 if you actually answer 24/7. Otherwise, don''t lie.
5. Description (10 minutes)
750 characters. Lead with what you do. Mention your service area. Mention your primary service. Don''t keyword-stuff. Mention how long you''ve been around.
6. Services and products (15 minutes)
List every service you offer. Each service: name, description, price (or "Contact for quote"). Group services into menus if you have a lot.
7. Photos (15 minutes)
- 1 logo
- 1 cover photo (your shop, your team, or your best work)
- 8-12 work photos (real jobs)
- 4-6 team photos
- 1-2 vehicle photos if you have branded trucks
Real photos beat stock photos every time.
8. Posts (5 minutes)
Publish a What''s New post. Add a CTA. Add a photo. Set up a recurring weekly cadence so the listing stays fresh.
9. Q&A (10 minutes)
Pre-populate your own Q&A: ''Do you offer X?'' ''Do you serve Y area?'' ''What''s your warranty?'' Answer them yourself. This pre-empts spam Q&A from competitors.
10. Attributes (5 minutes)
Toggle every relevant attribute: ''Veteran-owned,'' ''Women-led,'' ''Online estimates,'' etc. These show as filter badges in search.
